“These vibrant portraits and music are a wonderful celebration our
country’s African-American heritage during Black History Month,” said
George Broderick, gallery founder.
“This art exhibit is about jazz musicians who I admire, but did not
know, yet I hear and ‘see’ them when I listen to their unique styles,”
said Rutherford. “I am privileged to have seen some of these players
perform, others I have only read about.”

Rutherford, also a musician, says he has drawn and
painted his subjects “in the act of performing, working to convey the
concentration, the fire and the effort that jazz musicians expend,
trying to get out the voices that swirl in their heads and souls.”
Rutherford’s paintings, masks and sculptures have
been exhibited extensively in the Northwest and are featured in many
private and public collections, including Portland’s Interstate Max
Line’s public art.
