"Les Enfants
Terribles"
The
Broderick Gallery presents its first one-man show of Portland painter Jack McLarty.
The show will consist of paintings describing the "formidable child" and
wood-block prints of local celebrities, "the venerable child". McLarty
will be available for discussion at the First Thursday Reception, February 7, from 6 PM to
9 PM and again at a reception on Saturday, February 9, from 11 AM to 3 PM in the gallery.
A Portland residant since 1921, McLarty obtained his education in Oregon and also
spent a number of years in New York studying with Anton Refregier and Joseph Solman. He
spent time in France doing etchings with Paul Franck and then, back in Oregon, worked with
the Japanese print makers Akira Kurosaki and Junichiro Sekino and subsequently traveled to
Japan. He also travels frequently to Mexico and his work often relflects the
influence of Rivera and Orozco.

McLarty taught for many years at he museum art school (now PNCA), The Portland Art
Museum mounted a retrospective in 1963. He has shown at the Museum of Modern Art and
the Smithsonian Institution. His works are in many museum collections.
