gives over the gallery to Portland Open Studios,
December 1 through 7, including First Thursday,
December 7, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The second show,
December 8 through 30, is a salon style show of all of
Broderick Gallery’s artists from around the globe,
including a holiday sale and party, December 9th,
from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Both shows offer excellent
opportunities to see the multitude of talent Portland
has to offer.

‘The 2006 Portland Open
Studios Tour is over but you can see all the artists
together in one glorious exhibition at Broderick
Gallery,” said artist and organizer Bonnie Meltzer.
“Maybe you missed the tour because of scheduling
reasons. Or just maybe you carefully plotted out your
tour for each weekend but stayed longer than anticipated
at each one because it was so interesting, making it
impossible to visit all 95 studios. Here is another
chance to see the depth and breath of Portland Open
Studios artists all under one roof.”
Portland Open Studios
artists come from all art disciplines and represent a
diverse variety of styles. Sculptors carve material away
or add it together by welding, bolting, fusing and even
sewing segments together. Ceramics artists, who are also
sculptors, push and pull the clay with their fingers as
tools while glass artists form three dimentional objects
with their breath. Sculptural functional objects are
represented as are sculptors who transform found objects
into a new life. Every kind of “paint” -- and the unique
ways that each artist applies it -- is included.
Traditional oil and watercolor, ancient encaustic and
scratchboard, and others too numerous to name.
But artists also make "paintings" with fabric, other
people’s garbage, melted glass and even real botanical
parts. The subject matter is as varied as the materials
-- portraits, abstract and realistic of people and
animals; landscapes and objects real and imagined;
social commentary about race, religion and politics; and
abstract paintings that move you to your core. And yet
amid
all this difference in an
exhibition like this one can see the connections that
the artworks have with each other.
Portland Open Studios
is an annual self-directed studio tour during the second
and third weekends in October where you an see artists
at work in their own environments. The artists are
chosen by a panel of arts professionals from outside of
the Portland Open Studios board and participating
artists. Each artist opens their studio and gives a
behind the scenes look at the making of artworks. For
