Magdalena,
Acrylic/Canvas, 29.5" X 37.5"
I
created this series of artwork during my time living in
Itajubá, Brazil. Itajubá is a small inland town in the Minas
Gerais region of Brazil. This provided me with an isolated
view of the country, the city I lived in, and the people I
was near. Through foreign eyes an experience like this is
all absorbing, from the sounds, views and the surrounding
atmosphere. In this work I tried to capture a glimpse into
my thoughts and views while I lived in Brazil. The residents
here became figures juxtaposed against deteriorating
architecture and a lush, mountainous landscape (the backdrop
for my narrative).

Madonna De
Brasil, Acrylic/Canvas, 24" X 30"
The characteristics of Itajubá and its people are
deliberately exaggerated in an effort to create an
all-encompassing Brazilian icon. This icon was influenced by
the religious imagery and undertones of this predominantly
Catholic country. I painted this work on canvas, and paper
with acrylic paint. I applied many layers of paint and
etched into the wet paint with pens, and other instruments
to create depth and texture that reminded me of sun
weathered Brazilian architecture.
