"Salsa o Ballet"

Oil/Canvas
Being offered a one-man show in Cuba has
been the greatest honor in my artistic career, said George Broderick, painter
and gallery founder. We are excited to offer a preview of the work I will show,
and to present Vanessa Calvert's inspiring work to Portland.
Broderick, an oil painter, developed an
interest in Cuba and its artists when he travelled to Cuba in February of 2003,
touring the provinces of Sancti Espiritus, Matanza, Santa Clara, and Ciudad de
Havana. In addition to museums, he was invited to visit artist's homes and
studios and was amazed by the excellent work being created by Cuban artists. In
appreciation of the warm welcome he received, Broderick later sent a large
quantity of art supplies to help the Cuban artists, and arrangements were made
to show four of the Cuban artists at the Broderick Gallery in September, 2003.
The show was received with great enthusiasm
by the Portland public, prompting another show in 2004 and an ongoing cultural
exchange. Broderick's trip to Cuba continues to have a profound influence on his
painting style, which can be seen in paintings such as Salsa o Ballet, Cuban
Rooftops and Sleeping Beauty Awakens. These and other works will show in Havana
at the prestigious Guayasamin gallery in June 2005.
In addition to showing at the Broderick
Gallery and his upcoming show in Cuba, Brodericks exhibitions have included:
All You Knead restaurant gallery in the Haight Ashbury district, San Francisco;
Blue Mountain Community College, Pendleton, Oregon; Peaceful Arts Gallery, La
Grande, Oregon; Id Space in Hawaii.

Vanessa Calvert
"Stairway"
24" X 36"
Mixed Media/Encaustic
Calvert takes an untraditional approach to
still-life by combining photo-collage, oil and wax. She aims to create a glimpse
of the world that teeters between real and unreal. Using photographs taken from
various angles and foci to simulate the flickering and scanning of vision, she
creates fragmented images that, when combined with collage and paint, once again
become whole.
Of her unique works, Calvert says: My work
explores the relationship between time, memory, and perception. Unable to
distinctly separate the three, I am drawn to a depiction of the world where all
exist simultaneously. Like a memory of a time or place, the subject of the
painting becomes suspended, with some pieces missing and some replaced. Each
image is separate from the rest of the world and yet linked to that world
through thousands of connecting threads.
Calvert, who was born and raised in
Portland, is a recent graduate of Whitman College, Walla Walla, Wash. In
addition to Broderick Gallery, she has shown at Sheehan Gallery, Whitman
College, Walla Walla, Wash., 2003; and Grapefields Wine Bar, Walla Walla, Wash.,
2002.
